Lost Pictures: The Ocean

So today I was exploring my external hard drive and I found a few folders of pictures that had never really been edited, so I'll be revisiting these when I have some time and editing them.

It's about this time of year that I start missing the ocean.

Southern China- Film

I took a film camera to China as well and never got around to posting any of the shots. So here they are. These are of Yangshuo.

One 22 hour train ride, 2 hour bus ride, and taxi later we made it from Shanghai to Yangshuo. After showering and eating our first meal in over a day (all the food on the train was sketchy and we didn't bring anything) David and I went to explore. This picture is from the first view I had of the river. It was breathtaking.

To get from out hostel to the city we'd go on this road with a pavilion. I came to love this covered walk way- whether it was sheltering us from pouring rain, trying to get through the crowds of people when the ships would come in, or buying a chocolate ice cream bar from the little boy at a shop.

China was an amazing adventure, and when I talk about it I can't really believe that I went there. I'm so thankful for the opportunity I had.

This last photo was a picture taken from a balcony of the hostel we all stayed at. It was nice eating breakfast next to such an amazing view.

Terezín Concentration Camp- Czech Republic

There was another side to my time in Europe that was a very humbling experience; while we were there we went to several different places that showed the devastations of World War II and what it did to Europe. One of these places was Terezín- a fortress turned into a Gestapo prison.

The Nazis used Terezin as a model Jewish ghetto to trick the Red Cross into believing that they were treating the prisoners better than they really were and to dispel rumors of death camps. Even though Terezin wasn't a death camp 33,000 prisoners died during their time there from poor treatment. 10,000 of those are buried outside the camp.

Most of the rooms were too dark to take pictures in, but here are some cells that had enough light to take pictures of and other areas of the camp/fortress. The first one below is the living quarters where the Nazis forced hundreds and hundreds of Jewish prisoners in together.

We got to spend a day in Prague... I only got to see a tiny sliver of the city, but I can tell you I was quite impressed with what I saw. I would recommend this city if you're ever making your way through Europe.

There's a beautiful astronomical clock that you can pay to get to the top of, and these pictures are from that. Legend has it that the town people blinded the man you made the clock after it was completed so that he would never make anything as beautiful ever again.

At night they light some of the buildings up around here.

Russia?

This was during my flight to China. I looked out the window and saw these amazing glaciers. The map on the plane made it look like we were over some obscure part of Russia, but I'm not sure. The sun never set on my way there.

This was the way back. The sun set, but only for a short while.

Van Trapped in Austria

I got to spend a day in Vienna, and lets just say I fell in love. It was my favorite place we went. Here are some photos from the excursion.

Here are some photos from St. Stephen's Cathedral. If you are ever in Vienna, you should really go here, being there in person was really inspiring.

We also got to check out the Opera House by watching it in the standing section (much cheaper!) I also helped write an article about that- check that out at the Daily Universe's website.

We also explored the market and around town including some more churches. It was incredible.

No Sleep, Just Hungary

So I'm here in Budapest, Hungary following the International Folk Dance Ensemble for the Daily Universe with a professor and a reporter... and it's incredible. We've been on the go most of the time, but we were able to sneak into the city twice during the morning and here are a couple shots. Pretty much we haven't been sleeping so I can only edit a couple photos for now. More to come!

Here is the Fisherman's Bastion. I tweaked it a bit and took out a tree, but it was really incredible.

Then we ate some really great dessert here. To add to the title of "No sleep, just Hungary" we've occasionally accidentally skipped a couple meals, but no worries we've had dessert about 3 times today.

A Change of Perspective

I went on this amazing camping trip to Capitol Reef and Escalante with a bunch of really great people from the art program. Here is the first picture of many more to come.

I loved this trip. We're going to be having a show based on this trip in October. I think I want to base mine on Perspective. I came to peace with a lot of things out there. Not only was it a different perspective being in nature, but I also received a different one for my life.

The Last of China

I decided it was time to pump these last photos out. Here are some pictures from the last days that I was there.

They lit up the mountains sometimes at night in Yangshuo, it was beautiful.

Here is that same river earlier in the day. They did ship tours. The real way to do it is on an illegal Bamboo raft. They are great!

People would often carry huge loads on their bikes or vehicles.

I have no idea what this thing below is, but I found it very interesting. It's like a mini home. Maybe a squirrel could live there?

And these are from the Moon Hill hike. This is what the mountain looks like from the bottom. There is a paved trail to the flat part and then a really muddy one if you want to climb the arch, which of course we did!

Getting Lost

After a 20 hour train ride (on the grossest train ever), 2 hour bus ride, and a taxi ride to our hostel we finally made it from Shanghai to Yangshuo. After scarfing down breakfast (we didn't eat anything on the train) we explored the country side and got lost off the trail we were trying to find and wandered around on bikes. It was the greatest thing ever.

This house had a pool in front of it that was bright green. I want to find out what it is.

This place (below) was about a ten minute walk from out hostel. It was wonderful!

If you ever get the chance to China, I highly recommend it. Still more to come from the trip.

Tongli- A Chinese Water City

This was really one of my favorite places that we went to in China. We had an adventure trying to get there, but we ended up making it and everything turned out great.

These fish were crazy. If you threw food into the pond they would swarm to it.

Old meets new

This is where I was sung happy birthday to. It was a blast. Also check out this sweet pirate ship.

The next day we went to a warehouse nicknamed 3 Ladders by a friend. It has tons of old cool things. It was a really interesting place, and you had to bring a flash light to be able to explore everything.

There's also tons of interesting things to see while just walking down the streets of Shanghai, that's bound to happen in a city of 22 million people.

Later that night we went to an old meat slaughter house that was turned into a mall. It was a really interesting building.

One of the cooler things about Shanghai is that there are skyscrapers wherever you look, but then thrown in randomly are these really old houses in the middle of the city.

Gardens and Temples

I was able to celebrate my 22nd Birthday in China. To start the day off we went to the Ancient Garden while trying to find Yuyuan garden, which is the garden that most of the pictures are from. Then we went to visit a Buddhist Temple. Shanghai is a loud, bustling place, and so it was fun to go to these gardens and to the temple and discover a more peaceful place. It was a great birthday which was celebrated with Pizza (I was dying for an American meal for my birthday haha) and a trip to the Bund with our friends. More pictures of the Bund will be posted soon. Enjoy.

First Real Day of China

So after finally getting to China we went out to eat with some really great people, and it was great, but I was dying from jet lag- so the next day was when we went out to explore. Shanghai is a really interesting place, and we had some good fun shopping and wandering around.

This was the cutest old couple ever. I want to be like them one day.

And I just have to throw in this last one for fun. This was the emergency evacuation plan for my hotel room. You got to love some Chinese to English translations.

Not China

So getting to China was an interesting experience in itself. My connecting flight was delayed and I ended up getting stuck in San Francisco alone for the day/night. Many other things went wrong, but after crying a bit and then getting things taken care of I bucked up for an adventure around the city. I asked some guy which way the ocean was and walked that way.
Side note- when I actually did get to China and through customs no one was there to pick me up. I was alone in China, I didn't speak Chinese, and I had no idea where to go or where I was staying. About a half hour later my friends arrived (crazy metro problems), and lets just say that was one of the happiest sights that I have ever seen! I was so happy they came back for me and found me!

Digital Photo Assignments thus far

Our first assignment was to portray why our life is awesome or why our life sucks. I decided to portray the life of a college student and how we never have food and often times the food we have is disgusting or rotten.

Then we had to do a portrait of the most important person in our life. The first time I did my Mom. My Mom is seriously one of the best people I know. She's completely selfless and a really hard worker.

My professor didn't really like this portrait though so I redid it, but I still like my original so I decided to put it up here anyway. The second time I tried to do a more creative. conceptual approach and had my boyfriend/ best friend Hank model for me with a lantern on a path. We've known each other for about 5 and a half years now, and he's been a real influence for good. He's always encouraged me to pursue photography and the opportunities within it.

Then we had to do a magazine cover. I took this picture about 4:30 or 5 in the morning while wandering around Salt Lake. I had taken my friend to the airport extremely early and then decided to go out shooting.

The next assignment was to do a self portrait with texture included in it. I won't explain the meaning behind this, but you can try and figure it out.

For the next venture we had to create our perfect world and composite at least 4 different images together. I decided my perfect world would to be up in the mountains with the stars in a nice grassy meadow. So I composited a picture of the stars together with Mount Nebo with another one of me in a field and then plopped in the moon for good measure.

After that we were told to take a color image and try and make it look like a silver gelatin print (like it's from film).

After that is when Aretha Franklin came into my life. We were assigned a random CD and listened to the music and then had to create a cover and back for it. I based my CD after the song, "You make me feel like a natural woman".

This was a day that I ventured out with the Large Format Camera for my zone class. I don't have a meter so I use my digital camera as one and so I decided to take some digital shots as well. When I went to go take picture that morning the cloud was covered in clouds and it had been raining quite a bit the past few days. I had been wanting to go to Deer Creek but the clouds at that way looked pretty menacing- towards Utah Lake things were a bit lighter, but I hadn't planned anywhere to go. I decided to chance it and go through the wall of clouds and venture through the canyon to the other side. Thankfully it was clearer on that side than anticipated and it didn't start raining until I had put all my camera equipment away.

These are the pictures I took for my Black and White Film Photoraphy class. I took pics of them with my digital camera to get them onto the web so there's some differences between how they look here and how they do in reality (they look really gray right now, but I promise that they are not haha). This is what I was doing though all night in the basement of the HFAC in the darkroom. Enjoy.

Looking Out

This was the first picture I developed for the semester. My roommate, Daniele, showed me this great place while we were doing another project. So we wandered around the hillside trying different things, and this is what I found. Take from it what you will.

Untitled

This is a portrait of my Grandma in her rest home that she lives in. I shot one roll of film, and wasn't satisfied and went back. I wanted to get an honest shot. She's a very important person in my life and I love her a lot, but unfortunately she is started to loose her memory and sometimes doesn't remember who I am.

The Coming Storm

This is my cousin and best friend, Lindsey. She was really embarrassed to be my model out in public haha. This is by Utah Lake.

7-10 PM

This is my friend Megan in our 3D design class using a saw to make a table. This class allowed us the opportunity to push outside of our comfort zone and do and use things we normall otherwise never would.

Disturbance at Midnight

I was having real trouble one week trying to get something to turn in. I did a bunch of shoots, but for some reason nothing turned out. This is what I got out of that experience, but it's still not my favorite. It's a crazy story though. I got a text saying that someone's car was on fire in our parking lot. As soon as I read it I grabbed my camera and tripod, and sprinted directly to the other side of the complex. I missed the flames, but ended up getting this shot with the sillhouette of the fireman instead. After taking a bunch of pictures of the car my roommates and I made cookies for the person whose car caught on fire. Sad thing was that it was about midnight and after his car was put out he went straight to work for a late shift.

Censor

I took this picture for my contemporary issue assignment. I've had a lot of interesting experiences this past semester with censorship at my work. Another interesting thing about this picture is that the original copy was actually stolen off the wall in the HFAC while on display so I had to reprint it to my liking again.

Drowning. Self portrait & Double Exposure.

This is a double exposure, that's why there's the crazy lines and juxpositioning. I felt overwhelmed by everything going on in my life and wanted to illustrate that feeling in a self portait. In order to get this shot I had to jump into a pool while it was still really, really cold outside and the sun had just gone down. I hit the water and couldn't breathe. We got three shots and this is the only one that worked. I had to be pulled out from the pool. I tried doing some more in the hot tub after, but they didn't really work.

Awakening. Self Portrait & Double Exposure.

This is another double exposure. I kind of wanted to try to do a ghostly feel with a spirit coming from a dead body.

The Orange Orchard

This was while on a roadtrip to San Diego for the weekend. One morning before the others were up my roommate, Daniele, and I explored the orange orchard at our friend's house. p.s. that dog talks.

The Place We Crashed.

This was in San Diego as well. We rented this sweet cart peddaling thing to go around these giant grounds with museums and parks and a theater and lots of things. Long story short we almost crashed a bunch of times and were laughing hysterically. Everyone was pooped out because there was way too many of us on the cart. So we stopped here for a moment to saunter and explore.

Trespassing

We took this by a tunnel that goes to the library. Apparently we were trespassing without every knowing it. I took this picture digitally as well.

This was in my 3D design class as well. I found the swirl of the chicken wire intriguing, that element combined with the amazingly small fstop of my lens created this picture.

I was driving in the middle of nowhere and saw this, ran out and took a picture. It was so beautiful in person and I actually started laughing because I was so happy. My car broke down that day and a whole bunch of other things went wrong, but if they hadn't then I wouldn't have been able to see this. I think that's how life works sometimes.
